Robert Walsh

Mayor of Bolton: 1842-43 (Liberal)

Born: Bolton 16 March 1791

Died: Chorley Old Road, Bolton 9 July 1873

Textile and bedquilt manufacturer - inherited the business from his father, Thomas Walsh.

Trustee of Little Bolton.

Represented West Ward 1838-40, East Ward 1841-47, 1853-59. Alderman for West Ward 1859-65.

Appointed as one of the first group of Borough magistrates in February 1839.

As a young man (before the advent of the railways) he was in the habit of walking from Bolton to Manchester two or three times a week on business.

Originally attended the Wesleyan Chapel at Bridge Street and played the bass viol in the choir there. Later attended St George's Church.

Staunch teetotaller, strongly opposed to the sale of alcohol.

He married Elizabeth Arrowsmith on 12 August 1822 at Bolton Parish Church. They had 11 children but only 5 survived.
