Roger Walker

Chairman of Westhoughton Urban District Council: 1901-02 (Conservative)

Born: Westhoughton 20 May 1838

Died: Hart Common Farm, Westhoughton 6 July 1925

Farmer - Hart Common Farm, Wigan Road, Westhoughton. He retired from active farming in 1905.

Represented South Ward. Magistrate up to the time of his death.

By 1897 he was the oldest official in the town, having been an overseer, a Guardian for 12 years, a member of the Local Board from 1876 and later a member of the Urban District Council.

As senior member of the Council he laid a cornerstone for Westhoughton Town Hall on 18 April 1903, as did Walter Ernest Tonge, Chairman of Westhoughton UDC 1902-03, 1925-26.

Member of the Royal Lancashire Show Society. His knowledge of agricultural matters was profound and he was often called upon to act as a judge of horse and cattle classes at various shows and as an arbitrator in agricultural disputes.

Member of the Episcopal Church.
