William Thomas Sutcliffe
Chairman of Westhoughton Urban District Council: 1944-45 (Conservative)
Born: Burnley, Lancashire 1898
Came to Westhoughton with his family in 1911.
He joined the Black Watch at 17 and served during the First World War in Mesopotamia, India and Palestine. He also took part in the post-War Allied occupation of the Rhineland until 1920.
On return to Westhoughton he joined the Weaving industry there and became Secretary of Hall Lee Manufacturing Co from 1927
Represented East Ward from 1938, defeating the 'Father' of the Council, Joseph Hilton.
He was a keen boxer at school and in the Army.
