Richard Shelmerdine

Chairman of Turton Urban District Council: 1942-43 (Liberal)

Born: Salford 6 August 1875

Died: Penrhyn Bay, Llandudno, Caernarvon, Wales 17 December 1955

Bleacher.

First worked on the London & North Western Railway. Began his career in the bleaching industry in Manchester aged 14.

Worked at Harwood Vale Bleach Works from 1897, moving to Merton's Bleach Works at Astley Bridge four years later and eventually returning as manager to Harwood Vale in 1915.

Father of Arthur Shelmerdine, Chairman of Turton UDC 1953-54.

Councillor from 1934, Lancashire County Councillor from 1939. Retired from both offices in March 1946.

Chairman of Darwen Division Liberal Association 1937-45.

Director of the Bleacher's Association Ltd.

President of Stockport Chamber of Commerce.
