Harry Lockton

Chairman of Little Lever Urban District Council: 1954-55 (Labour)

Born: Boton 1923

Death: Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire 3 July 2010

Educated: Congregational School; Little Lever Secondary Modern

Development Engineer, Dobson and Barlow.

Graduate of the Institution of Production Engineers.

During the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy.

Represented West Ward from 1951. Magistrate 1961.

He was Chairman of the Establishments and Streets and Sanitary Committees. As Chairman of the latter he was proud of the sodium lighting installed in Little Lever.

He was on the Bolton Regional Sewage Scheme Committee, the Farnworth Road Safety Committee and the Regional Smoke Abatement Committee.

When he was appointed Chairman he was thought to be the youngest person ever to hold the office on Little Lever Council and his wife, then 26, was the youngest Chairman's wife.

He was Chairman of Little Lever Bowling Club and auditor for the Cricket Club, as well as Secretary of the Boxing Club.

Being Chairman was, he said, "the highest honour that anyone can hold in this village".
